MacaulayMaps is a new service supplying maps and related publications that are available from the Macaulay Institute. We offer a series of soils maps and climate, forestry and agricultural suitability maps, at various scales.

Coloured Soil Maps

Soil maps are available at either 1:50 000, or 1:63 560 (“inch to mile”) scale. These are coloured for easy reading of soil types. They are suitable for small scale applications, e.g. farm plans, building work.

Uncoloured Soil Maps

Uncoloured soil maps are available at either 1:25,000 or 1:50, 000 scale. These are suitable for applications where colour would be a distraction. The 1:25,000 scale is suitable for small areas where maximum detail are required.

Cost:

£21.60 for a 10 x 10 km map (1:25 000 scale)

£43.20 for a 10 x 20 km map (1:25 000 scale)

Land Capability for Agriculture Maps

These maps cover the principal agricultural areas of Scotland. The sheet lines conform to the Ordnance Survey Landranger series. Sheets are normally supplied folded, but flat maps are available also.

Soil and Land Capability for Agriculture Maps

Large scale soil maps are available at 1:250 000 scale. These cover large areas and are suitable for education, strategic planning or study.

This series covers the whole of Scotland in seven overlapping sheets. Each of the sheet areas is presented as a package consisting of a soil map, a map showing land capability for agriculture and a fully illustrated handbook. The maps and handbook for each area are not sold separately. The maps are normally supplied folded, but flat copies are available on request.

Similar maps are available for forestry.

Soil Series Description Sheets

Soil series description sheets provide summaries of the soil properties and related environmental factors for many of the more extensive or locally important soil series shown on the 1:50 000 (coloured), 1:63 360 (coloured) and 1:25 000 (uncoloured) soil maps.

Cost: £1.20 each.

Soil Memoirs

These books contain introductory chapters on physical features, climate and parent materials. The soils are described in soil associations, series and complexes. Succeeding chapters contain information on vegetation, agriculture, forestry and analytical data. The appendices contain sections on the definition of terms and tables of analytical data and plant communities.
